Top 5 Ways to relieve Period Pains

This one is for the girls who suffer from period cramps. I feel you, they suck. They make you lethargic, wear you out and ruin your day. School and work become way harder and since it’s not an official reason to take “leave”, other alternatives must be used to lessen our monthly female discomfort!

Uterus contractions cause much of the pain felt during the menstrual cycle because the contractions inhibit blood flow to the lining of the uterus. Abdominal cramps, low-back pain and leg discomfort are common symptoms. Taking pain medicine can help but only temporarily. It simply masks the pain instead of addressing the root of the challenge. Here are my top tips for relieving those dreaded period cramps

  1. Drinking Warm Tea

I love drinking warm tea, especially during my periods. It relaxes my body and helps me deal with my menstrual cramps. A great tip is to listen to music while your drink the tea and quieten your surroundings to help your mind relax and thus soothe the body! My favourite is to drink some green or camomile tea!

2. Yoga Stretches

This is a great one- if you have the space of course! The best pose to do is the camel pose as it lengthens the muscles around the abdominal area.

To start on the pose, kneel on the floor with the knees hips-width apart. Turn your thighs inward slightly and press your shins and feet firmly into the floor. Rest your hands on the back of your hips (place the base of your palms on the top part of your glutes and point your fingers down). Inhale, lift your chest, and press your shoulders down, towards the ribs.

Exhale, push the hips forward as you lengthen the front of the body and arch back. Keep your hands on the back of your hips or on the back of the heels. If you place your hand on the heels, press your toes into the floor to lift the heels higher. Use your hands to stabilize, push the hips forward, and lift the chest. Drop the head back, gaze upward, and breathe steadily. Stay in this pose for 30 to 60 seconds.

3. Eating dark chocolate

The most indulgent tip, but I love it. Eating chocolate during your period is actually scientifically proven to help reduce menstrual cramps as it’s a natural pain relief, can I get a hallelujah? Dark chocolate will satisfy your craving, help relax your muscles, and keep you happier without consuming the fat and dairy in other types of chocolate.

4. Drinking Water

So important in life! Your body needs to stay hydrated on regular days so all the more important when you are having your period. Like chocolate, it is reduces pain naturally.
